Xavier Talton is a modern rarity a pass-first point guard who receives more joy when a teammate knocks down an open look he created than he does from making his own baskets.
Not that Talton isn't quite capable of being a scoring machine.
By blending an unselfish style with a closer's killer instinct, Talton helped lead Sterling to its first boys basketball state championship since 1984 and leads the Class 4A all-state team as Mr. Basketball.
"After our first round win against Kennedy, we knew we had a good shot at it," said Talton, a junior who has not made a college commitment. "Everybody put in the work during the offseason getting better at knocking down shots. We like to run a motion offense, with dribble penetration and then finding the open guys to knock down shots. And that's what we did."
Throughout the season, Talton routinely sliced through opposing defenses to set up his sharp-shooting teammates with open three-point looks, leading to a style that left four Tigers with scoring averages of at least 12 points a game. Talton averaged 14.5 points, 6.5 assists and displayed a knack for coming through in big games, averaging 21.3 points during the Tigers' final three state tournament games.
"The thing he does is that he makes everyone around him better," said Windsor coach Dustin Duncan, whose club handed Sterling one of its two losses before watching Talton torch the Wizards for 22 points in the state final. "He gives everyone open looks."
